The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has slashed its forecast for Australian economic growth, warning policy action in response to the global recession will have a limited impact.

Releasing its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF forecast the Australian economy would contract by 1.4 per cent in 2009, before growing by 0.6 per cent in 2010.

The IMF expects world growth to decline by 1.3 per cent in 2009, more than the 1.0 per cent fall it projected in March, and a hefty 1.8 per cent reduction from what it predicted at the start of the year.

It sees global growth rising 1.9 per cent in 2010.

The severity of the global recession, shown in the IMF's 'bleak assessment', has dragged Australia's economy into recession, Treasurer Wayne Swan says.

However, the nation's outlook 'is a much milder contraction than expected in almost every other advanced economy, which combined are expected to contract by an unprecedented 3.8 per cent in 2009,' he said in a statement.

The IMF also forecasts unemployment in Australia will rise to 7.8 per cent by 2010, compared to a 9.2 per cent unemployment rate for advanced economies as a whole.

The assessment together with substantial downgrades in its global growth forecasts, presents the 'most challenging backdrop' to an Australian budget in living memory, the treasurer said.
