Anglican church caught up in global financial crisis

The Anglican Church in Melbourne says it might be forced to cut staff or close ministries because of a $1-million budget shortfall.

The church is facing a $1-million deficit in the first six months of next year, and there are fears it could blow out to well over $2-million by the end of 2009.

Church registrar, Kevin Spackman said the global financial crisis is partly to blame, because the church relies on investment income.

"The global financial crisis is obviously starting to have an impact on a lot of not for profit organisations and agencies, and the Anglican church in Melbourne and Geelong, we've been caught up in that," he said.

He said there could be cutbacks after the church performs a review.

"In the current economic environment, you know, there's actually increased demand for a lot of those services and the support that we provide the community."

"We will be looking at all of the services that we provide and the way that we provide them and trying to balance the need for us to be fiscally responsible with the needs of the community and how we balance those."
